The SWEEP……..
it Was Abt to Happen Again

The SWEEP….when the reigning angler of the year also wins that qualifying year’s classic.

The 2009 Southern Tier Bassmaster’s Club Classic was held Saturday and Sunday July 24 & 25, 2010 on Chautauqua Lake with less than desirable weather conditions. Wind, rain and an eventual tornado Saturday afternoon made things interesting, to say the least. But on this weekend something special and rare happened.

The reigning 2009 Angler of the Year, Joe Abt, won the Classic. Hence the SWEEP! This has only happened one other time in 2003/2004 when, the then college boy, John Siejak became the first in the club to achieve the honor.

Joe took this tournament wire to wire tallying a 5 fish limit Saturday of 14 pounds and then a 4 fish bag of 12.35 pounds to total 26.35 pounds. The second day bag contained the tournament lunker weighing in at a hefty 4.49 pounds. All told Joe earned $810 for the two days and winning by nearly 4 pounds over second place finisher Wade McClurg.

Wade was tied for second place after the first day with Jeff Kilbury at 13.71 pounds and could only put 3 fish in the livewell the second day for 8.80 pounds. Kilbury also struggled and brought 3 fish to the scales that weighed 4.43 pounds, dropping him to 6th place. The 8.80 pounds held up for McClurg to remain in second place and to ward off the hard charging Charlie Mackintosh. Wade took home $337.50 for his 22.51 pound two day total.

Mackintosh, who was in 5th place after the first day with an 11.19 that contained a dead fish, put together a second day limit weighing 11.30 pounds for a total of 22.49 pounds. In the end the .25 pound penalty assessed for the first day dead fish left him .02 pounds short and leaving him in third place. He collected $202.50.
